Cathie is one of Australia's leading corporate lawyers, with over 30 years’ experience in the Australian financial sector.

Cathie is a Commissioner of ASIC, Australia's corporate, markets and financial services regulator. ASIC is constituted by its Chairman and four other Commissioners.

Cathie's direct responsibility at ASIC is markets regulation, including financial markets infrastructure, supervision of listed markets, investment banks and market participants and market integrity enforcement.

In her 17 years as a General Counsel in Investment Banks, Macquarie Capital and JP Morgan Australia, Cathie developed a sound reputation as a specialist in equity, debt and private capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, and compliance and legal risk. Cathie was closely involved in the development of the legal, compliance and risk functions within Macquarie Capital.

Since joining ASIC, Cathie has led a team that has developed and implemented a four year $40 million program that changes the way ASIC monitors the markets, interacts with market participants and identifies, analyses and investigates market misconduct. Cathie’s responsibilities also include ASIC's implementation of OTC derivatives regulatory reform in the Australian markets.

In line with her commitment to diversity, equality and access, Cathie sponsors ASIC’s Reconciliation Action Plan, designed to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and investors can access services that are equitable, responsive and relevant to their needs. Cathie also recently launched for ASIC the ‘Women's Money Toolkit’, which helps empower women to take control of their financial health and wellbeing.

Cathie has been active in developing female talent at Macquarie Group and ASIC. This includes establishing a global legal team within Macquarie Capital with a significant number of female lawyers, through which she provided development and promotion opportunities. Cathie actively sponsors diversity initiatives within ASIC including the adoption of specific diversity principles and targets (with accountability) in the teams she leads.
