In 1998 Jan took unpaid leave from the Public Service to accept an approved private sector appointment as a consultant with Credit Suisse First Boston & Deutsche Morgan Grenfell. In 2001 she was awarded the IPAA Centenary of Federation Medal in recognition of her contribution to the Australian Public Service.

Jan holds a Bachelor of Arts, and a Diploma in Continuing Education from the University of New England, a Bachelor of Social Sciences from Charles Sturt University and has attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.
Jan was a founding member of the Women's Network in the Department of Finance in the early 1990s. She approved flexible working arrangements for senior women which was revolutionary at the time, and which enabled progress into more senior roles while balancing family responsibilities. Her commitment has continued at DHA where she champions flexible working arrangements including extending their take-up by men.
