Professor Jan Thomas is Vice Chancellor and President of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). USQ is based in Toowoomba with three university campuses at Toowoomba, Springfield and Ipswich. USQ has been a leader in distance learning by leveraging technology since the 1970s, which has allowed it to serve rural Queensland and international communities through its on campus, off campus, and online programs.
Before taking up her position at USQ, Jan was Deputy Vice Chancellor at Murdoch University from 2003 until 2010 and the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Notre Dame Australia from 2010.
Jan is Chair of the Association of Commonwealth Universities Managing Council, the Regional Universities Network and the State Library of Queensland. She has a PhD in Veterinary Science from Murdoch University and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute for Company Directors. She has received numerous national and international awards for her leadership in education.
Jan is a strong advocate for the transformative role of education, both as a mechanism for social justice and as a key driver for national productivity and innovation. Jan has led gender equity initiatives in all Universities she has served. She speaks publicly on issues of social justice and equity.
