Joanne Toohey is the CEO of The Benevolent Society, Australia’s oldest charity. The Benevolent Society is a not-for-profit, secular organisation that has helped individuals, families and communities achieve positive change since 1813. It is recognised as a leader in developing Social Benefit Bonds, for its centre for leadership development (Social Leadership Australia) and for delivering flexible social support services for families in crisis, people living with a mental illness in the community and older people needing help at home.
Joanne was previously the Director of Operations for UnitingCare Ageing responsible for managing their residential, independent living and community care services across six regions in NSW and ACT. With over twenty years of experience working within the Community Services and Aged Care not-for-profit sector she has over 14 years at the executive level and strong skills in financial and operational management, staff management and change management.
Joanne ensures that she is working with organisations and teams who promote diversity, and has always ensured that there are equal opportunities for advancement and growth. Joanne is passionate about the need for equity in Australian society and has brought practical research to bear in developing real influence on policy. She has a strong personal commitment to social justice and ensures that this is reflected in her personal and professional life.
