Merryn York is Chief Executive of Powerlink Queensland, a government-owned corporation that owns, operates and maintains the high voltage transmission network in Queensland. She is responsible for leading the development and implementation of Powerlink's long-term strategy, acts as an advisor to the board and is the key liaison point for government and government authorities.
Merryn has more than 25 years’ experience in the Queensland electricity industry. An electrical engineer by profession, she has worked in all facets of transmission network management from strategic business development and asset management to optimise long-term return on investment, network planning, regulatory affairs, customer management and strategic development of the transmission network.
This experience provided Merryn with the insight and knowledge to lead Powerlink Queensland through the most significant period of change the organisation has ever undergone, driven by changing consumer expectations, regulatory reform and increased economic pressure. Her challenge has been to align the business to a mission of responsibly delivering electricity transmission services that are valued by shareholders, consumers, customers and the market.
As a successful engineer and leader in a male-dominated industry, Merryn is an inspirational example to women in non-traditional fields. She enjoys sharing her experiences and insights with female engineering students as a program partner of the UQ Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology. Merryn is a popular choice as a keynote speaker and has presented at forums such as the Ernst and Young Women in Utilities series and the Young Engineers Executive Breakfast series.
