Vanessa Torres commenced at South32 as Chief Technology Officer in 2018. Prior to this she was Vice President Operational Infrastructure at BHP.

Over an 11-year period Vanessa’s roles at BHP spanned strategy, operations, business development, planning, projects, investments and value management. She has over 26 years of global mining experience across both operational and commercial roles across three continents. Much of her earlier career was spent in senior roles with Brazilian mining giant, Vale.

Vanessa holds a Doctorate and Master degree in Minerals Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, and a Bachelor of Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. She was also a Visiting Scholar at the University of British Columbia, Canada, with her research focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence in the mining industry.

She is board member of Foodbank WA and is also a member of the CEDA-WA State Advisory Council and UWA’s Dean Council. Over the last 14 years, she has been a director and main financial supporter of the NGO, Projeto Colmeia, in Brazil.

Her professional and social responsibility contributions have been recognised by awards in Brazil, Canada and Australia. In 2017 Vanessa was named Exceptional Woman in Australian Resources in recognition of her commitment to improving the representation of women in the resources industry over the course of her career. She was also recognised among 2016’s 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.
