Belinda Speirs

Belinda was appointed as Group General Counsel for Suncorp Group Limited in 2017, and is a member of the executive leadership team. She is responsible for the legal, company secretarial and internal fraud functions across its Australian and New Zealand businesses. Since joining Suncorp in 2013 she has held a number of roles including within the commercial insurance business and various roles leading the legal Advisory, Litigation, Legal Operations and Group Financial Crimes (including AML/CTF) teams. Belinda provides strategic support across a number of key initiatives including strategic M&A activities, capital raisings, enhanced corporate governance and optimisation of internal fraud management. She led the Group’s response to the Financial Services Royal Commission and enhanced management of material litigation including implementing the first bespoke model litigant framework amongst Australian insurers. Belinda is committed to embedding gender and cultural diversity and is the executive sponsor of Suncorp’s employee resource group that focuses on driving visibility of and creating pathways to enhance cultural diversity at leadership levels. Belinda is also the champion of Suncorp’s legal pro bono initiatives which include providing legal rights education to vulnerable and First Nations teenagers. Prior to joining Suncorp, Belinda was in private legal practice for nearly 20 years, in both Australia and South Africa where she focused on commercial and financial services litigation.
