Natalie Brown
Born in Launceston and educated in Hobart through the public school system, I was first in my family to attend University, having received an Education Department studentship. After eight years teaching Science/Mathematics on the North-West Coast and Hobart, and starting my family, I returned to study a PhD in Plant Science in 1995.
My 25-year career in Higher Education began with appointment as a Lecturer in Science Education, later Director of the Bachelor of Teaching, followed by central roles in learning and teaching and academic quality, and now leading academic governance.
Concurrent with leadership roles, I have continued to actively engage in teaching or facilitation of professional learning. My teaching has achieved recognition through a national Citation and a national Teaching Excellence award.
My research interests encompass educational attainment, teacher professional learning, STEM education and Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. I have supervised thirteen Doctoral students to completion.
In 2015, I became Director of Academic Quality and the Tasmanian Institute of Learning and Teaching making significant contributions in the areas of peer-led professional learning, teaching scholarship, assessment, curriculum and, technology enhanced teaching and learning. I have delivered invited workshops and presentations across Australia, in South-East Asia and Germany.
In 2017 I joined the Peter Underwood Centre as Director, consolidating the strategic direction of the Centre's collaborative practice approach to tackle the important issue of raising educational attainment of all Tasmanians. In 2020 I was awarded the Outstanding Leadership for Education award by the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) Tasmania.
