CEW members are leaders across diverse sectors in Australia, including government, business, sport, academia, the arts, and the not-for-profit sector. Our members share a unifying goal: to remove systemic barriers and create pipelines that enable Australian women to rise to leadership positions in their communities—ensuring a diversity of women's voices at every decision-making table, and ensuring that both men and women can thrive in both the workplace and at home.

Our History

In 1985, 15 visionary women executives founded Chief Executive Women (CEW) to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership. Their foresight laid the foundation for CEW's commitment to championing women's leadership, focusing on diversity, inclusivity and gender equity in Australia. Anne Gorman OAM

Anne Gorman, a University of Sydney graduate, led Australia’s UN task force for the International Year of the Child. In 2003, she co-founded The Institute of Executive Coaching, collaborating with Telstra, BHP, ANZ, and government bodies. Her leadership expertise drives organizational success and leadership development.

Barbara Cail AO

Barbara Cail, founder of Rala Information Services, managed 12 business magazines and exhibitions. In 1984, she launched Portfolio magazine, inspiring the creation of Chief Executive Women (CEW). A relentless advocate for women in business, Barbara's leadership has shaped CEW’s legacy, originally affiliated with Women Chiefs of Enterprise in Paris.

Bonnie Boezeman AO

Bonnie Boezeman, an experienced board member across funds management, insurance, IT, and retail, is committed to philanthropy and supports the Australian Golf Foundation. Actively involved in CEW, she sponsors a Leadership in Nursing Scholarship, fostering future leaders.

Carla Zampatti AC

Carla Zampatti AC, one of Australia’s top fashion designers, founded her label in 1965 and served as Executive Chair. Known for her designs that empowered women, she contributed to the 1960s women’s liberation movement. Carla held prominent board roles and earned multiple accolades, including the Order of Australia. She passed away on 3 April 2021.

Geraldine Paton AO

Geraldine Paton, a former Executive Director of News Corporation and seasoned company director, has been instrumental in advocating for gender equity and leadership diversity. She was honoured with the Order of Australia in 1999 and the Centenary Medal in 2001 for her contributions to business and society.

Gillian Franklin

Gillian Franklin is an award winning entrepreneur, experienced Chair, and NED. She founded one of Australia’s largest distribution companies, The Heat Group, selling a product every 3 second across 40 brands to 7000 retailers. NED experience includes Chair Abbotsford Convent, Chair Ad Standards, Chair Microsurgery Foundation, Deputy Chair Australian Grand Prix, NED CEDA, Melbourne Theatre Company, Quintis, ACCORD and the Prime Minister Gold Medal Access Committee.

Heather Leembruggen

Heather Leembruggen, Chair of IAA Australia, has been involved with the International Advertising Association since 1976. A director of IAA Australia since 1978 and IAA World Board since 1984, she held global roles including World Treasurer and VP. Heather has received numerous awards, including the Australian Centenary Medal in 2003 for her service and achievements.

Helen Lynch AM

Helen Lynch AM, former Westpac Director, chaired the Westpac Foundation and Staff Superannuation Fund. A Founding Director of the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, now the Westpac Scholarship Fund, she serves on its National Selection Committee. Helen has held numerous arts, charity, and government roles and received the Order of Australia in 1994, Centenary Medal in 2003, and an honorary doctorate from Griffith University.

Imelda Roche AO

Imelda Roche co-founded Nutrimetics International in 1968 and acquired its global interests in 1991, selling to Sara Lee Corporation in 1997. An Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) since 1995 and Centenary Medal recipient in 2001, she has served on numerous boards, including St Vincent’s Hospital, Garvan Medical Research Foundation, and Bond University.

Julia King AM

Julia Marion King AM is a prominent businesswoman with a distinguished career. She was a Director at Fairfax Media and CEO of Louis Vuitton, Australia. Julia served on the board of Opera Australia and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2010 for her commitment to both business and the arts.

Pauline Markwell

Pauline Markwell is a Director for The Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation, leveraging her expertise in marketing, communications, fundraising, executive search, management consulting and business leadership. Pauline’s passion for botanical conservation and her professional proficiency converge to create a powerful force for positive change within the organisation and beyond.

Penelope Seidler AM

Penelope Seidler AM is the Director of Harry Seidler and Associates, earning her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney in 1964. A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, she serves on arts boards including the National Gallery of Australia. Awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001, she received the Order of Australia (AM) in 2008 and honorary doctorates from UNSW and the University of Sydney.

Penny Carl-Nelson

Penny Carl-Nelson is an accomplished entrepreneur and film industry expert, specializing in financial management and film advisory. She co-produced 33 Postcards, the first joint film project between China and Australia. Her inspiring journey highlights the dynamic intersection of entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation, leaving a significant impact on both local and international cinema.

Bev Dyke

Bev Dyke’s expertise is in the Public Affairs industry, where she established a successful consultancy business and then went on to be Chief Executive of two industry advocacy groups in advertising and medical research. Bev has experience on publicly listed and private companies, government boards, industry advisory committees and has mentored senior executives. She was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003.
