Dr Sarah Ryan is a Non-Executive Director of Woodside Petroleum. She has more than 25 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry in various technical, operational, senior management, and corporate officer positions, including 15 years with Schlumberger Limited. Sarah is currently an energy adviser for US-based institutional investment firm Earnest Partners, having previously been responsible for research and portfolio management on energy and natural resources from 2007 until January 2014.
Prior to joining Earnest Partners, Sarah was the Chief Operating Officer for MTEM Limited, an oilfield technology company based in the UK. She started her oilfield career with Schlumberger in 1990, and during her fifteen years with the company lived in six countries on three continents, and worked in field operations, research, engineering, manufacturing, and general management. She has also worked in the utilities industry as a manager responsible for technical and commercial asset management of Australian gas pipelines and networks.
Sarah has a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Geophysics and a PhD in petroleum geology and geophysics from the University of Adelaide, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Melbourne. She holds several awarded patents in the US, UK and Europe and has published technical papers in refereed journals.
She is also a Non-Executive Director of Akastor ASA (formerly Aker Solutions ASA), an oilfield services investment company publicly listed in Norway, and Vautron Holdings, a privately-held oilfield and mining services company with operations in Australia and Asia.
Sarah is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Energy, and a Member of the AICD. She has for many years been active in formal and informal mentoring of women in STEM, especially those in the energy, natural resources, utility and defence industries.
